Behavior Management in the NEW YEAR

Hi peeps!

Since my class ended things on a somewhat crazy note in December, I've decided bribing my kiddos back into good behavior habits will be a great way to start the new year.

Journal Prompts for the NEW YEAR!

I wanted to make a FREEBIE for you that included some New Year's Writing Prompts!  I love the New Year because it is a great time to reflect and make some "attainable" goals and to get kids writing!  

Writing is a skill that requires daily practice.  These simple journal prompts are designated to help BEGINNING and/or STRUGGLING writers build confidence, practice articulating thoughts, work on fine motor skills and use proper letter formation.  

Included on each journal prompt:

*I Can… statements with text and visual support to remind students to:

-use capital letters

-use finder spacing between words

-sound out and spell words

-use periods

-draw pictures to support their writing

*Illustrated Word Bank to help students spell words and generate ideas for their writing.

*Place to draw a picture to support their writing.

Christmas sight word match

We have been working away on our sight words all year and I'm happy to say that almost all my students know all the pre-primer Dolch word list.  In the new year we will be starting on the primer list.

My students really enjoy sorting their words and this is the perfect Christmasy activity for the job.  The kids don't even know they are still working.

Festive Feast Freebie

On Monday we had a festive feast at our school.  It's a wonderful time of year for a get together to share good will and food.

Reading Fluency Practice

My students are learning how to blend words and starting to read like champs! We are working a lot on word families and finding chunks in words to help us read. I created these fun fluency family mats as a fun way to help my kids read fluently.

We used the large foam dice I found at the Dollar Tree because large dice makes any game fun ;) I introduced this game during guided reading groups. My students took turns rolling the dice, finding the matching number on the paper, and touching each word as they read it. Some of these students, who knew 0 letters and 0 sounds at the beginning of kindergarten were reading like champs!! #happyteacher 

Here's a short video of one of my students demonstrating how to play the game. Since we are just working on the "at" family words, we only used this mat. As we learn more word families, we will use more! You can try out the at family fluency in your classroom too! Grab the free download {here} in my store!

Secret Santa FUN!

Happy Holiday Season, everyone!!  I'm stopping in today to share a fun way to celebrate the holidays with your friends and coworkers!

Every year, my close teacher friends and I--there are nine of us--organize a Secret Santa gift exchange.  It's SO fun!  To help us find gifts for our Secret Santa recipient, we use this little form that I created:
